IC engines are usually petrol/gasoline fired or diesel fired, but it is possible to use other fuels as well e.g. methane gas. All of an engine's main parts are discussed in detail during the video. The engine shown in the video is a four-stroke diesel engine although it has similarities to a four-stroke petrol engine. Two stroke engines have a much simpler design, less parts, and thus they weigh less (with a correspondingly high power to weight ratio). A four-stroke combustion engine consists of the following main parts: Rocker Arm – presses down upon the valve bridge or valve stem. Tappet Clearance – space between valve tip and rocker arm. Valve Spring – returns valves to closed position when rocker arm not applying force. Fuel Injector- injects fuel. Fuel Inlet Pipe – transfers fuel to the fuel injector. Suction Valve – allows air into the combustion space. Exhaust Valve – allows exhaust gas to exit the combustion space. Fuel Injector Nozzle – sprays atomised fuel into the combustion space. Clearance Volume – the volume calculated between top dead centre and the top of the cylinder. Swept Volume – the volume based upon the stroke of the piston and area of the cylinder bore. Cylinder Volume – the total volume within the cylinder. Cylinder Bore – the internal diameter of the cylinder. Compression Ratio – a calculation based upon the volume ratios within the cylinder. Petrol/gasoline engines have a low compression ratio (6-9:1) whilst diesel engines have higher compression ratios (14-20:1). Top Dead Centre (TDC) – a piston’s furthest point of transit towards the inlet and exhaust valves. Pushrod (push rod) – transfers force from the cam lobe to the rocker arm. Piston Crown – the top of the piston. Piston Ring Grooves – where the piston rings locate within the piston. Piston Rings - used to seal the space between the piston and cylinder liner. Stroke – the distance the piston travels from bottom dead centre (BDC) to top dead centre (TDC). Piston – the piston. Piston Skirt – the piston skirt (may be short or long). Piston Pin / Gudgeon Pin / Wrist Pin – the connection between the piston and connecting rod. Cylinder Wall – the boundary of the combustion space (also sometimes called the cylinder liner). Cylinder Liner – the internal surface of the cylinder. Camshaft – used for controlling engine timing such as fuel injection and valve timing; driven by the crankshaft. Cam / Cam Lobe – presses against the tappets to actuate the rocker arm(s). Cam Follower – is pushed by the cam and transfers the movement to the push rod. Bottom Dead Centre (BDC) – the closest point a piston reaches to the crankshaft. Connecting Rod (Con Rod) – connects the piston to the crankshaft. Crank Web – used to reduce vibration and balance the engine; part of the crankshaft. Crankpin Bearing Journal – crankpin bearings are installed between the connecting rod and crankpin. Main Bearing Journal – bearings installed to support the weight of the crankshaft and hold it in position. Plain Bearings – also known as journal bearings; separate metal surfaces via a thin film of lubrication oil. C. Engine, an acronym for an internal combustion engine, is an engine in which fuel ignition and combustion occur inside the engine. It works on the principle that the charge is ignited inside a combustion chamber under very high pressure. The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar two-stroke and four-stroke piston engines, along with variants, such as the six-stroke piston engine and the Wankel rotary engine. Four-Stroke Engine: The petrol engine works on the principle of the otto cycle, also known as the constant volume cycle. The spark plug fitted at the top of the cover initiates the ignition of the petrol. In a four-stroke engine, all the events, i.e., suction, compression, power, and exhaust, are completed in two revolutions of the crankshaft. Four-Stroke Diesel Engine: The basic construction of a four-stroke diesel engine is the same as that of four stroke petrol engine, except instead of the spark plug, a fuel injector is mounted in its place. A fuel pump supplies the fuel oil to the injector at higher pressure. It works on the diesel cycle or constant pressure cycle. Two-stroke Petrol Engine: The two-stroke engine requires one revolution of the crankshaft or two piston strokes to complete the cycle of events (i.e., suction, compression, power, and exhaust). The two-stroke petrol engines also work on the principle of working the otto cycle. Two-Stroke Cycle Diesel Engine: The Two-stroke Diesel engine works like the Petrol engine, but it injects diesel at the end of the compression stroke. Description IC engine with NO crankshaft Planetary gear-sets can be incorporated in the design of an IC engine by replacing the conventional style crankshaft. This concept could be used in IC engines of all sizes, spark ignition or diesel, two or four stroke, the only stipulation being, in its simplest form, the architecture be that of a “boxer” opposed cylinder configuration. The mechanisms principal benefit is to provide the piston with a connecting rod attachment that eliminates ALL angular thrust between the piston and cylinder wall. Additionally, engine designs would no longer require the fabrication of a forged, cast or billet crankshaft to provide drive to the output shaft. The attached video is of a proof-of-concept prototype engine. The base engine concept is that of a common-axis, two cylinder module incorporating the cylinders, cylinder heads and pistons of a two-stroke Kawasaki 340 engine. By using a number of commercially available spur gears and bearings a “gear-case” with a 2.0-in. stroke was designed to operate with the 2.36-in. bore of the donor engine. The pair of planetary gear-sets, with the annulus gears held stationary, are connected through a ball bearing mounted link to an opposing pair of planet gears. The link carries a linear bearing attached to a shaft fixed to the shuttle assembly. The shuttle's motion is then defined by an additional pair of linear bearings traveling on fixed parallel shafts. The shuttle assembly carries the connecting rods and pistons. This mechanism allows the purely linear motion of the pistons and connecting rods to be converted to rotary motion by keying one or both output drive shafts to its associated planet carrier to provide one revolution of the output shaft for every cycle of the pistons. Alternatively, one shaft could be keyed to its associated sun gear to provide a step-up drive in the ratio of annulus gear teeth to sun gear teeth. In this simple video we will explain all the steps involved in this process, from the ignition to the operation of the internal combustion engine. When you get on your car the first thing you do, after putting the seat belts on, is to insert the key in the ignition switch to start the engine. When the switch is turned on, the electric circuit between the battery and the starter motor is closed. The starter motor is an important element for the starting system. It allows the engine to reach the proper rpm so as to initiate the engine's operation under its own power. The starter motor essentially transforms the electrical energy into mechanical energy. The starter motor is coupled to the FLYWHEEL, which in turn provides to transmit the motion to the CRANKSHAFT. Now the combustion cycle takes place inside the engine cylinders, so the starter motor is disconnected. Now let's see what happens inside the engine, taking the example of a common 4-STROKE ENGINE. A four-stroke engine is an internal combustion engine widely used in cars. It represents an example of efficiency and perfect synchronization. It converts the explosions that occur inside its combustion chambers into motion. The 4-stroke engine in fact gains its energy from heat released during the combustion of the air and fuel mixture inside its cylinders. The aim of this engine is to use this energy to provide movement and transfer it to the wheels, so that the vehicle can move. This process requires only 4 simple steps: It all takes place inside the cylinder. Here we can find the combustion chamber where the explosions occur. The cylinder is basically the space through which the piston travels. The purpose of the piston is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a piston rod or a connecting rod, so that the back-and-forth linear motion of the pistons is transformed into a circular motion which can power the wheels. But let's see this process more in detail by disassembling the engine. 02.34 This process requires only 4 simple steps: It all takes place inside the cylinder. Here we can find the combustion chamber where the explosions occur. The cylinder is basically the space through which the piston travels. The purpose of the piston is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft The term “four-stroke” is reffered to the cycle of engine operation which requires 4 strokes of the piston: First stroke: INTAKE: The valve must be in the open position while the piston pulls an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder by producing vacuum pressure through its downward motion. The air and fuel were previously mixed together by the injectors. The air-fuel ratio is generally about 14.7 to 1. That’s becouse fuel cannot ignite alone. It is the oxygen in the air in fact that provides the combustion of the fuel. What happens now that the air-fuel mixture is iniside the cylinder? Second stroke: COMPRESSION: During this stage both the intake and exhaust valves are closed, and the piston moves up the chamber to the top. This cause the compression of the fuel-air mixture which decreases 10 times its volume. At this point pressure rises drastically as the air and fuel molecules are compressed together colliding with eachother and increasing the temperature. Now we are ready for the explosion! Third stroke: COMBUSTION and EXPANSION: At the top of the compression stroke, the SPARK PLUG fires, igniting the compressed air-fuel mixture. This causes an explosion! As the fuel burns it expands, increasing the pressure inside the cylinder and driving the piston downward moving the twist that rotates the crankshaft, which will convert the energy of the explosion into rotary motion. Now, let’s see the fourth and final stroke, which is called: EXHAUST. During the exhaust stroke, the piston, once again, returns to the top while the exhaust valve is open. This action expels the spent air-fuel mixture through the exhaust valve. The 4-stroke cycle is complete but it does not stop here. At a speed of 6000 rpm it repeats up to 50 times per second, causing 200 explosions per second inside each cylinder of this 4-stroke engine. The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar four-stroke and two-stroke piston engines, along with variants, such as the six-stroke piston engine and the Wankel rotary engine. A second class of internal combustion engines use continuous combustion: gas turbines, jet engines and most rocket engines, each of which are internal combustion engines on the same principle as previously described.[1][2] Firearms are also a form of internal combustion engine,[2] though of a type so specialized that they are commonly treated as a separate category. In contrast, in external combustion engines, such as steam or Stirling engines, energy is delivered to a working fluid not consisting of, mixed with, or contaminated by combustion products. Working fluids for external combustion engines include air, hot water, pressurized water or even liquid sodium, heated in a boiler. ICEs are usually powered by energy-dense fuels such as gasoline or diesel fuel, liquids derived from fossil fuels. While there are many stationary applications, most ICEs are used in mobile applications and are the dominant power supply for vehicles such as cars, aircraft and boats. ICEs are typically powered by fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil. Renewable fuels like biodiesel are used in compression ignition (CI) engines and bioethanol or ETBE (ethyl tert-butyl ether) produced from bioethanol in spark ignition (SI) engines. Renewable fuels are commonly blended with fossil fuels. Hydrogen, which is rarely used, can be obtained from either fossil fuels or renewable energy.

INTRODUCTION Heat engine: A heat engine is a device which transforms the chemical energy of a fuel into thermal energy and uses this energy to produce mechanical work. It is classified into two types- (a) External combustion engine (b) Internal combustion engine External combustion engine: In this engine, the products of combustion of air and fuel transfer heat to a second fluid which is the working fluid of the cycle. Examples: *In the steam engine or a steam turbine plant, the heat of combustion is employed to generate steam which is used in a piston engine (reciprocating type engine) or a turbine (rotary type engine) for useful work. *In a closed cycle gas turbine, the heat of combustion in an external furnace is transferred to gas, usually air which the working fluid of the cycle. Internal combustion engine: In this engine, the combustion of air and fuels take place inside the cylinder and are used as the direct motive force. It can be classified into the following types: 1. According to the basic engine design- (a) Reciprocating engine (Use of cylinder piston arrangement), (b) Rotary engine (Use of turbine) 2. According to the type of fuel used- (a) Petrol engine, (b) diesel engine, (c) gas engine (CNG, LPG), (d) Alcohol engine (ethanol, methanol etc) 3. According to the number of strokes per cycle- (a) Four stroke and (b) Two stroke engine 4. According to the method of igniting the fuel- (a) Spark ignition engine, (b) compression ignition engine and (c) hot spot ignition engine 5. According to the working cycle- (a) Otto cycle (constant volume cycle) engine, (b) diesel cycle (constant pressure cycle) engine, (c) dual combustion cycle (semi diesel cycle) engine. 6. According to the fuel supply and mixture preparation- (a) Carburetted type (fuel supplied through the carburettor), (b) Injection type (fuel injected into inlet ports or inlet manifold, fuel injected into the cylinder just before ignition). 7. According to the number of cylinder- (a) Single cylinder and (b) multi-cylinder engine 8. Method of cooling- water cooled or air cooled 9.
